Hello my name is Sprout I am a small 16 year old 11/2 hh pony . My story
began 15 years ago when I was just a youngster .It makes me so sad to think of
those terrible times. I remember standing next to my mother as we stood in
a dark smelly stable and seeing the look of fright in her eyes her body began to
shake "god help us son" she said to me softly. The stable door opened
there stood a big trailer and men with whips hitting out at us, as they drove us
into this dark frightening space they closed the doors it was so
dark and noisy then it started to move we where in there for
hours. Eventfully it stopped and the doors where opened
"where are we" I asked my mother I will never forget her words "We are at the
horse sales we are going to be sold I may never see you again after today but
remember I will always love you". This big fat man came into the trailer and
started to poke my mother in the ribs "ill give you ten for the mare don't want
the youngster". They called him the meat man .A rope was put over my
mothers head it was pulled so tight she could hardly breathe as the fat man
dragged her away that was the last time I saw my mother. As the day came to
an end all went quiet I was all alone except for an old man talking on his
phone "someone dumped a young colt can you give the poor thing a home !" I
was taken to somewhere called the yard. This was the start of my new life I
had a clean stable and plenty of hay and water but that night I could not
stop thinking about my mother and how she would love to be here. The morning
finely came and I was turned out into the paddock where I first meet Freddy
a small Shetland pony. Over the next few weeks my self and Freddy became good
friends. we played in the long grass and lay in the warm sun I began to
feel happy for the first time in my life. I would stand under an old tree
and remember my mothers words "I will always love you" a few years passed and I was now a
four year old .©
The Day I meet Marg and Sam
It was a warm summers day and I was standing under the old tree Sam a young
six year old girl and her mother Marg was walking towards me. Sam was holding
a large apple "I love apples" as they came near Sam held out the apple
and I began to munch then I realised they had put a head collar on me I
began to panic I pulled and pulled I was so frightened in the end I just
stood there shaking. the young girl slowly came up to me and gently
stroked my neck saying "I wont hurt you don't be frightened " she gently
took the head collar off and let me free. They returned to the paddock
every day I would stand by the gate waiting for them, looking for ward to my
apple. I got used to the head collar being put on it didn't frighten me any
more. Sam would take me for walk's round the yard I loved being tied up by
my own stable and having a good groom. Over time Marg got me used to all the
tack that ponies wear and Sam would sit on my back we would stand by the
school and watch all the big horse's getting ready for the show, Sam would
say to me "one day we will go to the show " That night I told Freddy what
Sam had said he looked at me and smiled "don't be silly your to small and
Sam's only six that's young for a human" The next day Sam tacked me up and
we went for a walk round the yard Marg was cleaning some tack ready for the
show the next day. Sam asked if she could take me." don't be silly Sam " All the big
horse's grinned " Thinks he's a gymkhana pony " Sam
wisped
we'll show them. over the next few mouths Sam took me into the school and we
would pretend we was at the gymkhana we had such fun . It was early morning
when Sam fetched me from the paddock . She threw her arms round my neck and
cried "mom said we can go to the show " That day I felt so proud of my self
I was going to the show.
Show Time It was Sunday morning the day of my first show Sam had bathed me
and plated my main the day before so I was looking my best. I was loaded
onto the horse box, as the door closed It reminded me of that terrible
day when I was with my mother she would be so proud if she could see me now."remember I will always love you " a tear filled my eye. The door opened Sam
lead me out of the box there were lots of horse's and ponies some was
cantering round some were going over jumps there was such excitement. Sam
tied me to the box and started to get me ready. Marg was talking to an old
friend of hers called Susan . They hadn't seen each other for a few years
Susan was talking about this pony she rescued from the meat man "ill bring
her to the yard tomorrow " Marg told Sam to walk me round so I
could get used to everything. There was such a lot going on big horse's
jumping fences, Small ponies in carts lots of people walking round .We
were going to be in the tiny tot's gymkhana it was time for our class. we had
to canter in and out poles and race other ponies. Marg and Susan were
shouting " go on Sam " then it came to an end all the ponies were waiting to
see who had won a voice said in first place "Samantha riding sprout " we
went into the ring to get our prize a big red rosette, then we had to canter
round the ring every one was clapping and cheering I just wish my mother
could see me. That night I told Freddy all about the day then stood under
the old tree thinking about mom "I will all ways love you "
Susan Came To The Yard
I was standing in my stable munching hay when I heard a horse
box come onto the yard, it was Susan Marg and Sam went over to talk to her I
couldn't see what was going on as I was to small to look over the stable
door but I heard a pony being lead out of the box. Later on Sam came to turn me
out into the paddock "there's a new pony in the paddock " she wisped I could
see Freddy taking to a small pony as I got close my heart began to race
could it really be it was it was my mom we just both stood there crying she
told me that Susan had bought her from the meat man. That night we stood
under the old tree talking for hours it felt so good to have my mother back.
The next day Sam and Marg came over to us and promised that we would
have a home for life. I am now 16 years
old Sam don't ride me anymore she rides a bigger horse and does a lot of
show jumping but she always looks after me. sadly mom died four years ago at
the grand age of twenty four but moms last few years were good ones. Freddy
is still here he is twenty years old some times I stand under the old tree
and remember her words " I will always love you ". |
